Private Rented Housing

Sandy asks…

private rented or council?

My partner collapsed and died suddenly at home in Jan this year, in front of our children, aged 6,7 and 12. I thought they were coping with it, or as well as can be expected but today i found my eldest sons diary and read that he was missing his dad that much he wanted to commit suicide and drew pictures of himself hanging. I went straight to the doctors and showed him this as i really dont know how to handle it?!!! My youngest son wont go upstairs on his own (his dad collapsed in the bedroom) and has started bed wetting again. The school says they seem fine at school and have talked to them and say that they seem to be dealing with it well. My main concern though is my son after finding this diary and he wont talk about it to me. The doctor has referred us to bereavment councilling but there is a 6 month waiting list and i am worried about what to do in the meantime. My son has said he can not bear to be in the house as it hurts him every time he goes to the toilet he can see his dad on the bedroom floor. I have looked in to moving but the only option i have at the minute is to gho private rented at 500 a month which i cant really afford, or to see if the council will rehouse me, maybe in 6 yrs time at the rate they get houses for let? I have been told to apply for medical rehousing on the mental wellbeing of my kids but am not sure if they would allow that as, my kids arent disabled or anything its the fact that their dad dropped dead at home in front of them, and im not sure if thats enough to get on medical priority with social housing? Any advice please? thanks

See if someone will swap house with you?

Law: Rented Property – How much gardening can I do?

How much gardening are you allowed to do in a property rented from a private Landlord?
I am renting a house which has a garden. Can I trim bushes, plant things or cut trees which broke due to heavy snow?

answers:

You can maintain the garden, so, weeding, trimming bushes, cutting the grass are allowed.
Usually planting new things shouldn’t be too much of a problem but always get permission first.
And trees that have become damaged due to the snow, get in touch with your landlord, they may send someone out to deal with that professionally.

Ruth asks…

can you get housing benefit if your privatly renting?

im thinking about a new career and will probably have to drop in wages. if my wage is low enough to get housing benefit, can i get it if im private renting?

answers:

Yes you can as long as your landlord will except it. They will look into a number of factors, amount of wages, suitability of housing eg is is too big or is it worth the money. As long as you pass these then you will be able to receive housing benefit. Go to http://directgov.org.uk for all the info you need
