Helen asks…
Advocates of socialized medicine, are you aware the US government has been in the insurance business for?
the past 40 years and is handling it badly. The National Flood Insurance Program started in 1968. The government ran insurance companies out of the flood insurance business. With no competition, the government can charge whatever it wants. Right now the program is 19 billion dollars in the red. Where do you think the money will come from to pay those losses?
Medicare loses money every year. Medicaid is a giveaway program. Can’t you see it would be impossible for our government to run health insurance?

answers:
I knew the National Flood Insurance Program was a federal government program but didn’t know they are 19 billion dollars in the red but I am not one bit surprised.

Nancy asks…
Do I need business car insurance even though I am just a carer and will i be covered if i carry a patient?
I understand that i may need business cover as I travel from home to home. Sometimes I carry a patient and need to know if I need additional insurance for this?

answers:
Yes you do – otherwise you won’t be insured, and certainly not for carrying patients. I used to do the same job, and couldn’t start until I’d proved I’d got the business insurance. It doesn’t cost much, if anything more.

Maria asks…
What type of business insurance will I need?
I am thinking about accepting a job with a telecommunications cabling company and will be considered an independent contractor. I will be running cable through ceilings, conduits, and walls. What type of insurance will I need to purchase in order to be covered should I damage other systems?

answers:
They’ll probably require that you carry general liability and workers compensation coverage. Keep in mind, GL coverage doesn’t cover you for damage you do to your own work.

Lisa asks…
How much does it cost for small business insurance in New York State?
I live in Buffalo NY. My friend and I are thinking about starting a home repair and minor remodeling business. We would do everything from roofing to painting. 2 work vehicles and just the 2 of us as employees. Do not need medical, just liability and Workers Comp.

answers:
While workers comp is probably a good idea it isn’t required if just the owners are working. Roofing Work comp is one of the higher cost businesses you could be in.
In addition to the liability insurance you will need insurance for the trucks as well. If they are your own trucks they may not be covered for business use under your personal auto policy.
All that said the easiest way to find out the cost is call 2 or 3 local agents. There is a lot of information that you haven’t posted here they will need to get you a correct quote.

John asks…
Insurance business introduction to the community and friends and family letter?
Does anyone have a sample of a letter to send out to everyone letting them know I am in the Insurance business as an agent, and to stimulate some first time prospects and business?

answers:
Don’t waste your time with a mailing campaign. Unless you already have a client base that you want to share information with, sending out a letter is costly and a waste of time. No one reads mail from someone they don’t know. And, they certainly will not call you just because you sent them a letter.
People will respond to people they know. Call up your friends and ask if they know someone. Introduce yourself to places that will need your services ie, Accounting firms, Law firms, Contractors, Real Estate Agents, Mortgage Brokers, Escrow Agents. These people will provide you with leads.
If you don’t believe me. Ask a successful independent agent how they made it in the business and what worked for them. It certainly wasn’t a letter.

Thomas asks…
What is the difference between business insurance and bonding.?
I am starting a commercial cleaning business and would like to know if I needed to be either/or insured or bonded.

answers:
I’m not an expert, but I believe the difference is that insurance covers your liability for accidental damage to someone else while bonding covers your liability for any willfull act. Examples would be if you went to someone’s home to do a job and you backed your truck into their foundation and damaged it, then your insurance would cover that. If you stole the lady’s jewelry when she wasn’t looking, then your bond would cover that.
